Housing in Mission

Access to affordable and diverse housing options helps ensure Mission can support population growth and economic sustainability, while fostering vibrancy, community wellness, and livability.

Mission’s Official Community Plan defines how housing is approached in the city in terms of affordability, accessibility, location, type, and density. To build on the work in the OCP and in Neighbourhood Plans, Mission has the following strategic housing initiatives.

Initiatives

Mission’s Affordable Housing Strategy seeks to reduce housing gaps, support the delivery of more housing units, collaborate with partners, and ensure residents have access to affordable and diverse housing options now and into the future.

The action-oriented, ten-year strategy provides a framework for addressing the housing gaps that were identified in the Housing Needs Assessment. It also builds on the vision for housing set out in Mission’s Official Community Plan and replaces the City’s first Affordable Housing Strategy adopted in 2010.

The strategy underscores the importance of collaborating with partners in the community and with other levels of government to support the development of affordable housing.

The development of the Housing Needs Report was led by the City’s Social Development and Planning staff in consultation with the public and many community stakeholders.

The total number of housing units estimated to be needed is approximately 1490, or 298 units per year. Looking at past building permit data shows that on average 165 units per year have been built, resulting in a shortage of units in the community year over year.

Mission needs a wider variety of housing stock to meet the community’s needs, including more purpose-built rental and affordable rental apartment units and fewer single-family dwellings. This report resulted in the development of Mission’s Affordable Housing Strategy to ensure the city is addressing all housing needs.

The Mission Sustainable Housing Committee is made up of a member of Council, staff, community health, wellness, and housing organizations, a builder, and residents. The purpose of this committee is to provide information and recommendations to Council concerning the ongoing challenges of affordable and sustainable housing impacting a broad array of Mission citizens and to identify potential solutions for increasing the supply of affordable and accessible housing and shelter.

BC Housing Supportive Homes Project

BC Housing is partnering with the City of Mission and Mission Community Services Society to provide approximately 50 supportive homes for adults at risk or experiencing homelessness at 7460 Hurd Street in Mission.
